Private Jet Charter to Miami: Which Airport to Choose
A private jet charter to Miami saves time and gives you the freedom to land close to where you are going. Miami has several airports that handle private jets, and choosing the right one can make your arrival much smoother. This guide covers the main airports, how to choose between them and how to plan the rest of your trip once you land.
Private jet airports in the Miami area
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport (OPF)
About 11 miles north of downtown Miami, Opa Locka is one of the most popular airports for private jets in South Florida. It has a long runway, full-service FBOs and easy access to North Miami Beach, Bal Harbour and Aventura.
Miami Executive Airport (TMB)
Formerly Kendall-Tamiami, Miami Executive is in the southwest of the city and is one of the busiest general aviation airports in Florida. Its runways are shorter, so it suits light and midsize jets better than the largest aircraft. It is convenient for Coral Gables, Pinecrest and South Miami.
Miami International Airport (MIA)
Miami International is the closest major airport to downtown and has the longest runways in the region, so any aircraft can use it. As a busy commercial airport, it can mean more traffic, delays and higher fees than the executive airports.
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE)
North of Miami, Fort Lauderdale Executive has excellent FBOs and handles everything from small props to long-range jets. It is a good choice if you are staying in Fort Lauderdale, or arriving for an event such as the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
A commercial airport between Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Dania Beach, also used by private jets, especially for larger aircraft.
How to choose the right airport
- Where you are staying: Opa Locka for North Miami Beach and Aventura, Miami Executive for the south of the city, MIA for downtown and Brickell, the Fort Lauderdale airports for Broward County.
- Your aircraft: larger jets need longer runways, which rules out some smaller airports.
- International flights: if you are arriving from abroad, make sure the airport has customs available at your arrival time.
- Busy periods: during Art Basel, Miami Music Week, big sports events and holidays, slots and parking at the private terminals fill up, so book early.
